The Lady Wolverines converted 15 of 24 free throws in the final quarter to outlast McLaughlin 61-53 in Herreid on Monday, Jan. 21. Herreid-Selby Area, now 12-0, is ranked third in the Class B polls.
Fouls cost the Midgets, who trailed by one, 40-39, after three quarters when H-SA connected on four out of five free throws in the first minute of the final period. Shauni Schwartz sunk four in a row, after a Midget technical was called, and then followed it up with a field goal to push the Wolverines advantage to 47-39 just over a minute into the fourth. H-SA connected down the stretch for the win.
Defense was fierce all over the court which limited the fast breaks both teams like to execute. H-SA racked up the first five points of the game before McLaughlin hit one behind the arc. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the first quarter with the Lady Wolverines eking out a 13-12 lead at the quarter stop.
McLaughlin opened up the second with a quick basket to go ahead by one before a pair of Haylee Biel baskets, a Taylor Madden basket, followed by the only Wolverine three of the night from Schwartz pushed H-SA’s lead to 22-15. The tides turned as McLaughlin added 10 more points in the quarter while a basket from Kendra Thorstenson was all the Wolverines could get to leave H-SA behind 24-25 at halftime.
In the third quarter, K. Thorstenson connected on four field goals and Abbey Fjeldheim had a pair of free throws and a couple baskets as the Wolverines converted on some fast breaks. Madden had the only other basket for H-SA while McLaughlin’s Bobbie Jamerson fueled her team with 11 points to leave the Wolverine’s a narrow 40-39 edge at the quarter’s end.
Free throws told the story in the final quarter as H-SA outscored the Midgets 22 to 14. The Midgets came within three 51-48 with a trey by Jamerson three minutes into the quarter, but Fjeldheim and Schwartz connected on 13 of 20 free throws down the stretch to keep the Wolverines on top. McLaughlin committed 26 fouls for the game compared to eight by the Wolverines.
Three Wolverine players hit double digits to fuel the win including Schwartz with 17 and Fjeldheim and K. Thorstenson both with 14. Jamerson had 24 for McLaughlin.
H-SA connected on 19 of 42 field goals and one of 10 from behind the arc.
H-SA tallied 37 rebounds including seven each by Schwartz and Biel, six apiece by Fjeldheim and Madden, five from K. Thorstenson, and three each by McKenzie Frank and Kelsey Quaschnick.
Schwartz led the team in assists, with four of the team’s eight, and made all four of the Wolverines’ blocks. Schwartz and K. Thorstenson both had four steals to add to the team’s total of 13. The Wolverines also committed 19 turnovers.

The JV picked up a 42-24 win, leading 14-4, 22-12 and 29-16 at the quarter stops. Jana Thorstenson led the team with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Others scoring were Quaschnick, five, McKenzie Reierson and Coutney Anderson, four apiece, Lacey Houck and Tegan Meidinger, both with three, and Michaela Seibel, Danielle Gusman and Grace Goehring, all with two. The team had 22 rebounds with Jess Kurtz, Seibel, Paige Dressel and Meidinger, all adding two. Meidinger also had three assists for the team.
Fast breaks abounded for the Wolverine C team who raced to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and led 30-6 at halftime before winning 42-22. Scoring were Goehring, 18, Anderson, 10, Gusman, six, Kendra Dressel, five, Kara Thorstenson, two, and Kurtz, one.
