Lady Wolverines edge Linton-HMB

History repeated itself when the Lady Wolverines connected on a buzzer beater to defeat Linton-HMB by one point again this year. Herreid-Selby Area over came an early fourth quarter deficit of seven points for the 44-43 win at Linton on Saturday, Feb. 2. Last season a three-point shot at the buzzer lifted H-SA to a 36-35 win over the Lions.
H-SA had narrowed the Lions fourth quarter lead to two, 37-39, when L-HMB connected on a field goal to go ahead 37-41 with 45 seconds left in the game. Shauni Schwartz drilled a three-pointer with 22 seconds to pull the Wolverines within one, 40-41. A pair of Lion free throws left H-SA down by three, 40-43. With six seconds remaining, Kendra Thorstenson drove the lane for a jumper to cut the Lions’ lead to one, 42-43. She missed at the charity stripe, but Schwartz tied up the ball on the rebound. With four seconds remaining, H-SA got possession under its own basket. McKenzie Frank made the inbound pass to Haylee Biel who put up the shot under the basket to give the Wolverines a one-point advantage as the whistle blew.
In the first quarter, Herreid-SA pulled away with a 12-6 lead as Frank hit a pair of treys and Taylor Madden, Schwartz and Abbey Fjeldheim also found the basket. L-HMB made a pair of free throws and then hit a field goal with eight seconds remaining to pull within two, 12-10. Biel swished a pair of free throws after the quarter ended to put H-SA ahead 14-10.
The Lady Wolverines led the whole second quarter until a six-point run by the Lions tied the game at 21 points with a minute and a half left in the half. Schwartz hit her second three-point basket of the quarter to give the Wolverines a 24-21 edge at halftime.
L-HMB had the first basket in the third quarter and K. Thorstenson answered with a Wolverine basket before the Lions hit two more field goals to go ahead 26-27. Schwartz added another basket followed by K. Thorstenson scoring on a fast break to give H-SA a 30-27 lead with three minutes left in the quarter. The Wolverines went cold and didn’t score again until two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter while the Lions finished out the third with four field goals to go ahead 30-36 at the end of the third quarter.
The Lions opened up the fourth with another basket for their biggest lead of the game, 30-37, before Madden hit a three and Schwartz added a basket. The Lions hit the next basket and K. Thorstenson scored on another fast break, leaving the Wolverines down by two, 37-39 with half the quarter remaining. The score remained there until the exciting final minute of the game.
Schwartz led the team with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. McKenna Flyberg paced the Lions with 11 points.
H-SA connected on 11 of 25 regular field goals and six of 18 from beyond the arc.
Others grabbing some of the Wolverines’ 25 rebounds included Biel, five, Madden and Frank, both with four and Kelsey Quaschnick and Fjeldheim, each with one.
H-SA had 15 fouls compared to six by the Lions. The Lady Wolverines had eight steals and committed 15 turnovers.

The JV team suffered a 40-55 loss. H-SA fell behind 7-16 after the first quarter and trailed 16-28 at half time. The Wolverines had a big third quarter out scoring Linton 13 to 10 to cut the Lions’ lead to 29-38 after three quarters. Linton had another big fourth quarter for a 15-point final edge.
Leading the scoring for the Wolverines was Jana Thorstenson with 15 points and Quaschnick with nine. Others scoring included Tegan Meidinger, five, Lacey Houck, Michaela Seibel, Brogan Kary, Courtney Anderson and Jess Kurtz, all with two points, and Grace Goehring, one.
The JV squad grabbed 34 rebounds led by Meidinger with nine, Seibel, seven, McKenzie Reierson, five, and J. Thorstenson, four. Meidinger had four assists and Reierson added three.
